The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin would speak to U.S. President Donald Trump by phone at 5 p.m. Moscow time (10 a.m. ET) on Monday.
Trump has said he wants to meet with Putin as soon as possible, and that such a meeting was the key to unlocking progress on peace between Russia and Ukraine.
He is also due to hold a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies after his conversation with Putin.
The first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in more than three years took place in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday, but did little to move the dial.
The Russians had sent a low-level delegation to meet the Ukrainian team, which had included some of Zelensky's top officials.
Zelensky was himself in Ankara and had challenged Putin to meet him personally in Istanbul. But Putin declined.
