During her weekly briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova spoke about Georgia's prospects for joining the European Union.
According to the Russian diplomat, all countries aspiring to join the European Union should remember the example of Great Britain, which left the bloc. Moscow believes that Brussels is destroying the economic independence of EU member states. Maria Zakharova also discussed Russian-Georgian relations. She stated that Moscow has repeatedly expressed its goodwill to restore bilateral ties.

"The main thing for those who want to join the EU in 2030 or other years is to consider whether it is worth becoming a member of the EU at all. On the other hand, remember that Great Britain would not have left anything good. Where there is benefit, where there is real potential, the British are usually the first. Now, they have turned out to be the first to leave the EU — for obvious reasons. Because the crisis situation within the EU is so evident, and the capabilities of the union’s member states are so predictable, countries considering their national economies have little reason to stay. This is everyone’s sovereign business. We have repeatedly said that, against the backdrop of current political disagreements and the absence of diplomatic relations with Georgia, we are building bilateral, mutually beneficial ties. A dialogue is underway in this regard. According to our plan, we strive to intensify business and humanitarian cooperation. Also, we are working towards normalizing relations, which aligns with the interests of the Russian and Georgian peoples. We have practically expressed our aspirations, goodwill, and desire. However, the issue is this: those who are considering joining the European Union would do well to pay attention not only to slogans but also to facts. It is one thing to write on fences, and another to do what is actually possible," said Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Russian side has often spoken about the prospects for restoring bilateral relations in recent months. However, Moscow regularly reminds Tbilisi of the pre-election messages of the "Georgian Dream," which included an apology to the Abkhazians and Ossetians.
