Afgan Sadigov, the founder and chief editor of the Azerbaijani media publication azel.tv, was arrested in Tbilisi. The journalist's wife, Sevinj Sadigov, has released a video showing the incident on social networks, in which it can be seen how MIA employees detain Afgan Sadigov in the car.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Afgan Sadigov was wanted in the Republic of Azerbaijan for the crimes of threats and extortion since 2024. The Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs arrested Afgan Sadigov for further extradition to Azerbaijan.

On July 19, an Azerbaijani journalist stated that he was not given the opportunity to leave Georgia at Tbilisi airport and was told that he only had the right to return to Azerbaijan.

"Another political order by Ilham Aliyev. They did not allow me to fly out of Georgia and said that I was not allowed to leave Georgia and could only return to Azerbaijan. Without giving any reason, they told me that my passport was simply not visible in the system," -  the journalist wrote on the social network.

According to RFERL Sadigov arrived in Georgia with his wife and two minor children on December 24 last year and has been living in Tbilisi for the past seven months. As he said in an interview, he was on a hunger strike for 242 days while in prison, which damaged his health.

"When I was arrested in 2020, I started a hunger strike in prison. I starved for 242 days, which seriously damaged my health, and I came to Georgia for treatment. Then I returned to Azerbaijan, but because I did not feel safe there, we moved to Tbilisi with my wife and children and from here, I continued my professional activities remotely," Sadigov recalled the period spent in prison.
