The U.S. Embassy in Georgia has issued a statement on the ongoing developments in the country, saying that those responsible for the "brutal and unjustified violence" must be held accountable. The statement also calls for the "immediate" release of those detained during the protests.
"Those responsible for the brutal and unjustified violence, including against protesters, media representatives, and members of the opposition, must be held accountable. Those who have been exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression must be released immediately," the embassy statement said, adding that Ambassador Robin Dunnigan met with Public Defender Levan Ioseliani "to discuss the importance of his and his team's work in protecting the rights of the Georgian people."
Earlier today, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan, along with her European colleagues, visited members of the Pirveli TV team who were brutally assaulted while performing their professional duties.
"Journalists have shown great courage in their efforts to inform the public. At times like these, it is clear how important a free media is to a free society. We strongly condemn the brutal and unjustified attacks by the Georgian Dream on members of the media and citizens of Georgia in recent days. As Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted, the United States is prepared to use the tools at our disposal, including sanctions, to ensure accountability for those who perpetrate violence and foster a violent environment," the embassy said in a statement.
