In an interview with Globalnews.ge, European Parliament member Andrius Kubilius responds to the Russian Law reintroduced in the Georgian Parliament and emphasizes that this decision will create obstacles in Georgia's path to joining the European Union.
"From the outside, it's very clear what the goal is, to create obstacles again. I don't know what is behind what, really, what their strategy is, but it's very clear that it will create obstacles for Georgia to join the European Union. The same goes for constitutional amendments against the rights of LGBT people and so on. All those who understand the European Union requirements, documents, and materials, understand that such proposals are against the basic values of countries that want to join the European Union. They need, first of all, to fulfill these basic criteria. For some reason, it's not very clear why Georgia and its government are generally showing that they will not go in that direction, they will not implement the basic values and criteria of the European Union, which, of course, is creating all possible problems for Georgia to join, in our opinion. They are very often related to oligarchs or business people who have created tertiary profits using the Russian market, gas, or other means. This pattern repeats from one country to another, as we have seen similar examples, for instance in Moldova, where a famous oligarch, Plahotniuc, was involved. We witnessed a similar situation in Ukraine with Yanukovich and now Georgia is experiencing the same. We can only hope that, as in other countries like Moldova, where the people were able to solve the challenge by voting against the oligarchs and Kremlin agents, and voting for progress under President Maya Sandow, the same will happen in Georgia. With upcoming elections, it is evident that the ruling party and its leaders are quite nervous. This is why Bidzina Ivanishvili has returned to lead a party that is introducing unwise and anti-European laws, possibly trying to serve Kremlin interests or create polarization in Georgia. In this situation, we can only use the instruments that we have at our disposal. For example, the start of negotiations and how these negotiations progress towards potential EU membership depends on both sides - on Georgian behavior and on the perception of that behavior within the European Union. Currently, the Georgian Dream party is intentionally provoking Europeans by demonstrating that they are not willing to fulfill the essential Copenhagen criteria", - said Andrius Kubilius.
According to his statement, the impression is created that the Georgian government is happy to fulfill the wishes of the Kremlin:
"This raises a simple question: Are those who oppose so-called Western influence doing so out of their own conviction, or are they implementing a hidden agenda driven by the Kremlin? It is crucial for Georgia, a significant country in the South Caucasus, to follow its own path and join the European Union. The Kremlin is actively working to prevent the South Caucasus from becoming part of the Western community, targeting authorities in Georgia. It appears that the Georgian authorities are content with implementing Kremlin wishes".
