After an hour-long phone conversation with Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the Georgian Dream, French President Emmanuel Macron addressed Georgia once again during a joint press conference with the Polish Prime Minister.
He emphasized that the head of the Georgian government had betrayed the European path, which contradicts what was promised to voters throughout the pre-election campaign.
"We have implemented cybersecurity measures and supported efforts against disinformation, but we must intensify our actions in these countries. Georgia has clearly become a target for attacks and manipulations, and I want to reaffirm our full support for those defending democracy and advocating for Georgia's European path. We are deeply concerned about the severe repression of young people and the troubling statements from the head of government, which signify a betrayal of the European path following the elections—essentially the opposite of what was promised to voters during the campaign," Macron stated.
On December 11, reports emerged of a telephone conversation between Emmanuel Macron and Bidzina Ivanishvili, the Honorary Chairman of the Georgian Dream. The French side issued a statement indicating that during the call, Macron urged the release of all individuals detained arbitrarily and called on Ivanishvili to uphold freedom of assembly and expression.
