"Do you support including in the constitution that Moldova wants to join the European Union?" Simultaneously with the election of the next president on October 20, Moldovans had to answer this very question. At this stage, the referendum on European integration has been completed, and 100% of the ballots have been counted. A total of 50.46% of the population supported the country's European integration, while 49.54% opposed it.

As it turns out, the fate of the referendum was decided by just 13,596 votes.

Regarding the presidential elections, the winner will be determined in a second round, which will be held on November 3. President Maia Sandu received support from 42% of voters, while former Prosecutor General of Moldova Alexandr Stoianoglo came in second with 26% support. These two candidates will compete in the second round scheduled for two weeks from now.

Russia failed to undermine Moldova's election, including a referendum on joining the European Union, the White House said Monday.

Moscow has "been working actively to undermine Moldova's election and their European integration," but "Russia did not succeed -- as the results demonstrate, Moldovan democracy is strong," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told journalists.

The European Union has not yet made an official statement regarding the Moldovan elections; however, Peter Stano, the EU spokperson noted that the 2024 presidential elections and the European integration referendum were held amid unprecedented Russian interference.

"This vote took place under unprecedented interference and intimidation by Russia and its proxies, aiming to destabilise the democratic processes in the Republic of Moldova," said Peter Stano.

Russia denies the allegations of meddling. On Monday, the Kremlin branded Moldova's votes as "unfree".
