On October 20, presidential elections are taking place in Moldova, accompanied by a referendum where citizens will decide whether to include in the constitution a commitment for Moldova to pursue membership in the European Union. This pivotal moment presents Moldova with a crucial choice: to align its future with the European Union or revert to Russian influence.
As reported by the Central Election Commission of Moldova, voter turnout had surpassed 33.3% by noon, indicating that the voting process is underway. The current pro-Western president, Maia Sandu, is facing off against ten candidates, with her main challenger being former General Prosecutor Alexander Stoianoglo, nominated by the Socialist Party in place of former president Igor Dodon.
Pre-election polls suggest that no candidate is likely to achieve the necessary majority of votes in the first round, which would trigger a second round of voting. Nevertheless, a significant gap exists between President Sandu and the other candidates. Regarding the referendum on the country’s foreign policy direction, studies show that more than 60% of voters are in favor of Moldova joining the European Union.
In a recent survey released by WatchDog, it was found that 35.8% of voters support Sandu, while the pro-Russian candidate Stoianoglo is in second place with 9.0%. Wealthy businessman Renato Usati, who has connections to Russia, follows in third with 6.4%. The remaining eight candidates in the presidential race each have support below 5%. Notably, 30% of voters were still undecided leading up to the elections.
"Moldova's future should not be shaped by corrupt money or lies, but by the people of Moldova. I voted for a peaceful and free development of our country. I voted to create the future that our nation desires and deserves. Every citizen should head to the polls, as each vote carries weight. Your vote is your voice in determining your own future. This choice will dictate how you will live starting tomorrow," said Maia Sandu after casting her ballot.
If no candidate secures a majority in the first round, the second round of elections will take place on November 3.
