The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Mikheil Janelidze, published a statement on social media, noting that "October 26 is the day that should return Georgia to the path of European family membership."
He shared a photo taken near the European Commission building and recalled the period of his ministry when members of the European Commission were skeptical about the prospect of Georgia joining the European Union.
"Fourteen years ago, when I entered this building of the European Commission for the first time, we were preparing to start negotiations on free trade between Georgia and the European Union. I was 29 years old at the time. The members of the Georgian delegation, all of us also young, were passionate about the common idea of making the country a member of the European family. At that time, you could not even mention the prospect of Georgia's membership in the European Union; we firmly believed in our European future. We knew that this was not an ordinary agreement with only economic implications; it was a step towards a historical goal. Today, that special feeling has been renewed, along with the emotions that the members of the Georgian delegation experienced, which ensured that our country could become an example not only for the Eastern Partnership countries but also for the Balkan countries in the process of European integration. Fourteen years ago, we could not have imagined the events that unfolded in Georgia over the past two years: on one hand, the European Union opened the way for Georgia to achieve full membership, and on the other hand, the Georgian government did everything to deviate from this path. The worst thing that the "Georgian Dream" has done in these two years is to present the European Union and the West as enemies to the people of Georgia. However, I believe in the intelligence of the Georgian people and that they will not fall under the influence of this propaganda. Despite everything, the "Georgian Dream" still has a chance to contribute to the European future of Georgia; for this, it is necessary to give the people the opportunity to make a choice freely and to respect the free choice of the people," wrote the former Minister of Foreign Affairs.
