On February 15, while visiting Marneuli to engage with local government officials, youth, and civic activists, EU Ambassador to Georgia Paweł Herczyński emphasized the crucial role of civil society organizations in legislative and decision-making processes. He stressed that the government must take responsibility to ensure their active participation. Herczyński also hinted at Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s upcoming trip to Brussels and expressed optimism about reaching a mutual understanding between Georgia and the EU to swiftly progress to the next stage—the initiation of accession negotiations.

Ambassador Herczyński underscored the necessity for inclusivity from the government, a constructive approach from the opposition, and the full engagement of civil society to establish national unity regarding Georgia's path to EU membership. In the same vein, the EU Ambassador acknowledged that "due to some internal developments in the platform," significant civil society organizations had chosen to withdraw from the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Platform. He emphasized that it is now the responsibility of Georgian authorities to devise a solution that involves all civil society organizations, both within and outside the platform.

When asked about the ruling party's contentious proposed amendments to the electoral code, disregarding the Venice Commission's recommendations, Ambassador Herczyński emphasized the Venice Commission as the "highest standard setter" for legal solutions. He expressed optimism that the Commission's recommendations would be fully implemented and assured that this issue would be thoroughly discussed in the upcoming week.

The EU Ambassador conveyed his hope for the continuation of the nine steps outlined by the EU alongside the pre-election campaign. While pledging support for Georgia's endeavors, he emphasized that the responsibility for this work ultimately rests with the people of Georgia.

Regarding the 2024 parliamentary elections, Paweł Herczyński disclosed plans for EU ambassadors to hold meetings with various Georgian political parties over the next few months. He emphasized their intention to gain comprehensive insight into the diverse ideas and electoral programs of each political party in Georgia, ensuring that European Union member states are well-informed.

Expressing his optimism, the EU Ambassador voiced his aspiration for both the 2024 elections and the preceding electoral campaign to adhere to the highest international standards.
