Globalnews.ge interviewed the Ambassador of the United States to the OSCE, who said that the EU’s decision to grant Georgia candidate status is a good development for Georgia, and there are expectations that Georgia will advance on its European path with additional progress.
“I think it's tremendous. I think it's a really good development that Georgia has attained the status of being a candidate. We're not members of the European Union. So it's not for me to say what conditions have been released. Of course, they're all very publicly known; There were 12 areas for improvement that were discussed by the Commission some many months ago. Now there is an expectation that Georgia will advance on its European path with additional progress, and certainly with free and fair elections in 2024. As a critical milestone, we see this as extremely positive that Georgia has a European perspective in front of it. When I was in Tbilisi in September, I discussed this with the foreign minister. I think that the Georgian government, at least the minister certainly agrees, I think the government has also agreed that this is a positive development. They want to be able to seize this opportunity that has presented itself. And I do see it as a a once-in- a-generation opportunity to advance the Euro-Atlantic integration path. And I'm very happy to see that this is now the case” - said Ambassador during the interview.
