"All five statements are a significant blow to the regime. Notably, for the first time, the British government has sanctioned the judicial system, targeting those responsible for the imprisonment of our prisoners," said Georgia’s fifth president, Salome Zourabichvili, during a briefing following her meeting with the opposition. According to her, statements from international partners represent a step toward victory.
"Today, we discussed two main topics. The first is a new initiative from the families of political prisoners, their coordination, and the apparent establishment of this format. From the 'Resistance Platform,' I want to once again express my solidarity with them and emphasize that the two main goals of this coordination remain unchanged: the preparation for new, free, and transparent elections and the release of political prisoners.
I must also highlight that the conditions of these prisoners—including instances of torture and ill-treatment—have been a constant topic in our discussions with international partners, both in individual party formats and now within a coordinated framework. It is significant that these efforts have yielded results, and yesterday marked a major blow to the ruling party and the regime, as serious and harsh reactions emerged from various sides.
On one hand, there was a joint statement from Kaja Kallas and Marta Kos from the European Union. On the other hand, the bipartisan statement from the Helsinki Commission addressed issues related to the Anaklia Port and China's involvement, which was also a strong message. The U.S. State Department spokesperson reminded the regime of what it needs to do if it wishes to improve relations with the United States. Additionally, the new sanctions from the United Kingdom, announced on April 2, and ODIHR’s statement regarding 'Fara' are critical developments.
All five statements represent a serious blow to the regime. It is particularly significant that, for the first time, the British government has sanctioned the judicial system, directly targeting those responsible for the imprisonment and detention of our political prisoners.
These statements and reactions from our international partners are already a step toward victory. This is how we move toward elections and the downfall of the regime. It is a difficult and long road, but politically, our coordinated approach is the only path that will lead us to the end," Zourabichvili stated.
