"We call on the [Georgian] authorities to stop all forms of intimidation against civil society, journalists, and the political opposition. This is shameful and must end," said the European Commission’s spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Anitta Hipper, in Brussels, as she spoke to the special correspondent of "InterpressNews."
Commenting on the egg-throwing incident involving Georgia's 5th President, Salome Zurabishvili, and one of the opposition leaders, Giorgi Gakharia, the spokesperson stated that the European Commission’s response would be a reduction in contact with the Georgian authorities and a freeze on financial aid.
"When it comes to Georgia and its democratic backslide, we have had a clear response, whether through reducing political contacts with the [government], freezing financial assistance, or supporting civil society. Furthermore, we call on the authorities to stop all forms of intimidation against civil society, journalists, and the political opposition. This is shameful and must end!" stated Anitta Hipper.
It is worth noting that eggs were thrown at Giorgi Gakharia and Salome Zurabishvili when they returned from the Munich Conference at Tbilisi International Airport.
