Three United States military personnel lost their lives and numerous others were injured in an assault carried out by an unmanned aerial drone on American forces stationed in north-eastern Jordan, close to the Syrian border, as stated by President Joe Biden on Sunday. The President attributed the attack to Iran-backed groups. In addition to the fatalities, "many" service members sustained injuries, according to Biden's official statement. A US official informed Reuters that about 25 individuals are under observation for potential traumatic brain injuries.
President Biden declared, "While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq". These casualties mark the first American deaths in a series of strikes against US forces throughout the Middle East by militias supported by Iran, amid the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Biden asserted that "will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner our choosing.”
Approximately 3,000 American troops are usually deployed in Jordan. According to CNN, the assaults occurred at Tower 22, a modest outpost of US forces participating in an advisory and support mission with Jordan. Following the commencement of Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza, US troops stationed in Iraq and Syria have encountered drone and missile strikes on their installations. This attack on Jordan signifies the initial instance of American troops being directly targeted in Jordan amid the ongoing conflict.
